Easter Island and the Boat House

If you think that there were boat houses to shelter boats, you are mistaken. The boat house or in Rapanui hare paenga is the house, where people lived in; another name is hare vaka. It resembles a boat upside down. Maybe boats were used before houses had been established. The houses have to cope with strong winds, maybe the shape is the best adaptation to these wind.

Nowadays one sees stones with drilled holes on the ground. These were used to wooden poles. Some of these boat houses were 15 m long, others up to 45 m. As long as palms were available palmfronds would have been used, but later, reed sugar cane leaves were used.

If you take the trail to Rano Kao you can see a replica of such a boat house.
